Autumn in Ili-Alatau National Park, Tienshan Mountains

Headed into the mountains this morning leaving before dawn.  The colours are impressive now and although no bird photos worth sharing, it was a great morning.  Rained lightly all morning.  Best birding was above Big Almaty Lake at about 2,500m in rocky area with juniper and thinly spread firs.  Showing well today were 1st winter Pied Wheatears, Evermann’s Redstarts, White-winged Grosbeaks, several Mistle Thrushes in close company with lots of Dark (Black)-throated Thrushes in a wide range of plumages. Probably the last trip to these heights for me for this year but who knows?
