Goshawk killer gets prison

Conservationists have welcomed the first-ever prison sentence for killing a bird of prey, as gamekeeper George Mutch was convicted at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.

George Mutch – a gamekeeper working on the Kildrummy Estate near Alford in Aberdeenshire – was convicted of four charges: the illegal use of a trap, the illegal killing of a Goshawk, the illegal taking of a Goshawk and the illegal taking of a Common Buzzard. Mutch, who used a captive Jay to entice Goshawks into his trap, was caught red-handed on video in August 2012:
